Retractable Pergola in Killarney, Co. Kerry – Outdoor Kitchen with a View
With the Kerry mountains on the horizon, this new home in Killarney deserved an outdoor space that could be used in any weather. Our team installed a wall-mounted retractable pergola that now covers a full outdoor kitchen and lounge area right outside the living room.
The project
The homeowners wanted the terrace to feel like a natural extension of the house – somewhere to cook, eat and relax without depending on the forecast. The pergola is fixed to the rear wall and spans the whole terrace, framing the view from the large sliding doors.
What we installed:
White powder-coated aluminium frame, wall-mounted
Retractable fabric roof in a light cream shade that keeps the space bright
Somfy motor with remote control
Integrated LED spotlights built into the roof rails
Cooking and relaxing under one roof
Under the pergola sits a built-in outdoor kitchen with a gas BBQ and a lounge area with rattan sofas. When the sun is out, the roof slides back to open up the sky; when the rain comes in from the mountains, it closes in seconds and the evening carries on. The LED spotlights in the rails light the whole terrace after dark.
Light inside, shelter outside
A common worry with a covered patio is that it will make the room inside darker. The light fabric and the option to open the roof fully mean the living room keeps its daylight – you can see it in the view through the sliding doors.
