Glazed Bioclimatic Pergola in Ireland: Open Roof, Glass Walls, All-Year Use

Our latest bioclimatic pergola project shows what happens when an open louvred roof gets glass walls. The family started with an anthracite pergola over their deck, and has now added sliding glass on the open sides. The result is a bright outdoor room they can use in the wind, the rain and the cold, without losing the view of the fields.

Before and after: from open pergola to glazed outdoor room

Before glazing, the pergola already gave shade and rain cover with its rotating louvres. Glazing two sides turned it into a space you can sit in on a breezy October afternoon. On warm days the glass panels slide back and it is an open pergola again.

Glazing options for your pergola

Every side of a pergola can be finished in a different way, depending on wind, view and how often you want it open:

• Framed sliding glass: strong aluminium frames, easy to open and close, a good choice for windy sites.

• Frameless sliding glass (10 mm): almost invisible panels for the cleanest view.

• ZIP screens: motorised fabric screens for shade, privacy and wind protection.

• Sliding shutters or a solid wall: for the side that faces a neighbour or the prevailing wind.

See more examples on our glass enclosures page.

Why a glazed pergola instead of a glass garden room?

A fixed glass room traps heat in summer and needs extra ventilation. A glazed bioclimatic pergola keeps its louvred roof: open the louvres and warm air escapes, close them and the roof is rain-tight. The glass slides fully open, so in summer you are back outside. Rainwater runs into integrated gutters and down through the posts.

Warm LED light in the evening

The LED strip built into the pergola frame lights the whole space with a soft, warm glow. With the glass closed it becomes a cosy room for dark evenings.
