Aluminium Pergolas in Ireland: Pergola Kit or Made-to-Measure?
Search for a pergola in Ireland and you will find two very different products under the same name: flat-pack pergola kits sold online, and made-to-measure aluminium pergolas that are surveyed and installed. Both have their place. This guide explains the difference so you can choose the one that will still be standing, and still dry, after a few Irish winters.
Why aluminium?
Timber pergolas look natural but need staining and can rot or twist in a wet climate. Steel is strong but rusts once the coating is scratched. Powder-coated aluminium does not rust, needs almost no maintenance and keeps its colour, which is why it has become the standard material for pergolas with a roof in Ireland.
Pergola kits
Fixed standard sizes, delivered flat-pack for self-assembly.
Usually a light frame with a simple fabric or polycarbonate cover.
Fine for occasional shade in a sheltered spot.
Often not rated for Irish wind and rain, and rarely waterproof at the joints.
Made-to-measure aluminium pergolas
Built to the exact size of your patio, wall-mounted or freestanding.
Engineered for wind and snow loads, with integrated gutters and drainage through the posts.
Motorised roofs: retractable fabric or rotating louvres, with remote control.
Options for LED lighting, heaters, zip screens and sliding glass sides.
Professional installation and a proper warranty.

Retractable or louvred roof?
A retractable pergola has a waterproof fabric roof that slides fully open. A bioclimatic pergola has aluminium louvres that tilt for light and air and close tight in rain. Our comparison pergola vs bioclimatic pergola goes into detail.

Do you need planning permission?
Many garden pergolas are exempt, but size, height and position matter. Check our guide on planning permission for a pergola in Ireland.
